I just encountered this article talking about how countless women go about protecting themselves while out on runs and in general:
Guys: what do you all do? We've heard a lot of solid suggestions from the ladies but I've had male friends tell me they've been attacked a few times too (in fact, I was there for one such instance with my friend AJ back in ~'06) and I don't hear much discussion from them on the defensive measures they take. Maybe you dudes have some good ideas you can share?
Personally, I used to just carry a small switchblade, often visibly open and ready in front of me, between work and the car when I worked in a particularly seedy area in downtown Las Vegas. I was almost just as worried about what a cop would do it they spotted me that way as I was about what someone else might do to me if I didn't bother. LOL Nowadays, I tend to just put on my mean face, assume I'm fast enough to outrun my assailants, and stay alert at all times when I'm running (or walking) through dodgy places. It also helps that I almost always have a husband with me or not too far from me now.
