When we dream and become aware that things aren't making sense, our minds sometimes defend the dream through methods such as justifying the inconsistencies between the dream and reality or rewriting the dream to make it just plausible enough to continue. In these instances, we protect against threats to the dream in order to keep it alive. Our minds may continue to do this until the challenge of reason becomes too much to contend with, the dream irreparably unravels, and we wake up. Perhaps this isn't dissimilar to the process we go through in daily life when wrangling with new information that challenges our existing beliefs. That subconscious desire to "keep the dream alive" can be powerful. Cognitive bias is something I often like to consider when presented with information, particularly that which does not fit with my current point of view.
